Kids Day at the County Fair

This agriculture awareness field day event was held at the Harris County Fair on October 18 and 19, 2006, for 3rd and 4th grade elementary students in Harris County. Students bused in from all over Harris County to learn more about agriculture and where their food comes from.

We had more than 1,350 students from 13 different schools and six school districts participated in six different learning stations. The learning stations included: a working cotton gin along with food grain products, provided by the Farm Bureau. A mobile dairy classroom provided the Southwest Dairy Museum. Interaction with cattle and pigs with discussion of food and other products that comes from farm animals. Vegetable and fruit gardening, as well as nutrition, exercise and food safety. All the stations and activities were developed to meet science, social studies, and health criteria required by school districts for the Texas Essential Skills and Knowledge.

Our Collaborators: Harris County Extension Staff, Farm Bureau, Kids Kow’s and More, Southwest Dairy Museum, Harris County Fair, Star Pizza and Blue Bell.

Congratulations to the two classes that will be receiving a pizza party for turning in their student evaluations from the Kids Day event. From Durkee Elementary, Ms. Jackson’s third grade class; and from Morales Elementary, Ms. Martinez’ fourth grade class.

Best of luck next year, and we hope you will to see you back in next year’s Kids Day at the County Fair!
